Nokia appoints new head of MeeGo efforts
When Nokia announced its new strategy on February 11th, it also announced that Alberto Torres, the head of Nokia's MeeGo Computers, would leave the company. Sebastian Nyström has now been appointed to head the MeeGo team at Nokia. Sebastian has been leading Qt at Nokia, making the framework available under open source, free-of-charge LGPL license and now he takes responsibility for future MeeGo efforts.

In a note to Nokia employees, Sebastian Nyström defined his role as:
  • Launching a product from MeeGo program later this year. The upcoming device will have unique appeal to the style-conscious, connected enthusiast.

  • Keeping Nokia on track to deliver necessary software updates following launch of the product.

  • Working with the Linux Foundation, Intel and the wider community to plan Nokia's future involvement in Meego.

Peter Schneider, Head of MeeGo Marketing at Nokia, wrote: "I know there was great disappointment in the MeeGo community, at Nokia's decision. Many of us have gone through an emotional journey ourselves. I'm personally happy to see Sebastian helping us to complete the evolution of our previous Maemo and now MeeGo efforts to an exciting product. MeeGo Developer Edition for the N900
As announced yesterday by Jukka Eklund (Product Manager at Nokia) on MeeGo Development list, the Nokia N900 will get own version of MeeGo - the N900 MeeGo Developer Edition. A dedicated team will be formed for this project, including the current N900 Hardware Adaptation Team. The goal is to deliver a flashable image of the OS that's fully usable as primary smartphone for developers/hackers.

Eklund wrote: "I am thrilled to announce a little thing we started at Nokia. Basically we want to have MeeGo running in N900 device, so that it's really usable as your daily development device. Basic Handset UX should work, phone calls, SMS, web browsing. So we are concentrating on a few selected features and polish those to be "perfect". It might mean that we leave out some things in MeeGo 1.2 trunk for this edition, but that is not the default intention.

We are doing this fully on the open, and I hope this is an interesting project where we all in the community work towards the same goal: have a great MeeGo edition in the N900. This work is naturally based on the great work done already by N900 adaptation team.

The wiki is up here: http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/DeveloperEdition. It will populated with more information as we go, thanks for the patience."

OK, so what does it actually mean? Well, change of plans, the N900 will eventually get kind of OFFICIAL MeeGo port. And that's a good news, at least for N900 owners. Still nothing that could be addressed to mass-market end-users, though.

What's somehow less exciting, however, is that it also probably means that launch of the actual MeeGo device (be it the rumoured N950 or whatever else) is actually... NOWHERE NEAR. If it was, Nokia most probably wouldn't be investing resources and creating a dedicated team to make a MeeGo development device out of the N900.

To recap, N900 users will get a MeeGo upgrade for their aging 1,5 years old hardware, but (at least not in the nearest future) not a new hardware to upgrade to, i.e. what's actually needed the most. And the MeeGo port will most probably be LESS functional than their current Maemo 5. And in such sense, while the efforts to push MeeGo development forward and bring it to kind of "production level" are highly appreciated, this announcement is actually as much disappointing as exciting. I bet that nine out of every ten N900 users would prefer to see an official upgrade to their current Maemo 5 platform in a form of (kind of) "Maemo 6" adding some missing features and improving the overall experience, or even just the same unchanged Maemo 5 on a new, powerful hardware that after 1,5 years is now so badly missing.

But OK, Nokia, most of us have learned that we need to be patient with you. So we warmly welcome and appreciate the MeeGo port for the N900, in hope that this time it's REALLY the promised last step before an actual, real MeeGo phone (kind of) announced for this year, and that it will help bring it to us quicker and make it better. Just please don't disappoint us this time...

Qt SDK 1.1 beta available
Nokia has released today Qt SDK 1.1 beta. With Qt 4.7.2 a lot of improvements and fixes for Qt Quick have been published. Qt Mobility 1.1.1 includes updates for the supported platforms. Qt Creator 2.1 will allow you to create and design your QML applications from within the IDE nicely.

What was missing so far was a nice and convenient way to get the whole package, namely the SDK. Now it's here.

The Qt SDK 1.1 beta is available now. The Qt SDK fills the gap between the Nokia Qt SDK, which provided a development environment for mobile targets, and the Qt Desktop SDKs. This allows you to develop applications for all platforms, which Qt supports. Compared to the Technology Preview a significant amount of updates has been included, namely:

  • Qt 4.7.2 for Symbian ^1 and Symbian ^3

  • Qt 4.7.2 for the Desktop

  • Qt 4.7.2 for the Qt Simulator

  • Qt Mobility 1.1.1 for Symbian^1, Symbian^3 and the Qt Simulator

  • Qt Creator 2.1 final

  • Qt Simulator 1.1 beta

  • Updates to the Symbian Complementary package, providing the toolchain and build tools for the Symbian platforms.

For the Linux and Mac platforms, SIS packages for Symbian have also been added, so that developers using the Remote Compiler can install Qt from their development host of choice as well. A full changelog is located in the installation package.

You can download the packages on the Forum Nokia pages.

Qt 4.7.2 released
Qt 4.7.2 has now been released. This is a maintenance release which contains bug-fixes based on feedback and contributions since the Qt 4.7.1 release back in November. It also marks the official release of Qt Quick.

Qt Quick is a new feature within Qt that makes it easy to create light-weight apps and UIs. It contains the new QML language, the Qt Declarative module, and new tooling in Qt Creator to easily build apps.

Packages are available from the Qt Download page, and for those who prefer to get it directly from the public git repository at http://qt.gitorious.org, there will be a "v4.7.2" tag soon.

Qt Quick 1.0 officially launched
Nokia has launched Qt Quick 1.0 today. Qt Quick is a collection of three technologies:

* QtDeclarative - the native library in Qt delivering native integration and the Qt Quick UI runtime
* QML - the Qt MetaObject Language, allowing declaration of User Interfaces and Experiences
* Qt Creator support for QML-based projects and code integration.

For the last year, QML and QtDeclarative has been available to both early adopters as well as mainstream developers through code pushed to gitorious as well as Qt 4.7.0 and 4.7.1 releases. Today the final piece of the puzzle has been launched: Qt Creator with the Qt Quick Designer.

Qt Quick Designer is a WYSIWYG editor for QML UI's, allowing you to visually create and arrange your UI's while staying in perfect sync with your QML code. This does not use a separate generative step like Qt Designer did - but directly manipulates your QML code. You can get Qt Creator along with the Qt Quick Designer and all the other features supporting Qt Quick from the downloads page.

In the near future some additional features for Qt Quick will be made available. This includes use-case specific elements for pinching touch interaction, free form touch interaction, support for Right-To-Left layouting and many other features and suggestions.

The team has also started last fall to build Qt Quick components for MeeGo and Symbian. While work is still continuing at a brisk pace on the MeeGo style, the Symbian style has now been fully transitioned to gitorious.org, allowing anyone to try it out on their Symbian ^3 device. This makes creating new Apps with native look and feel a lot easier and obsoletes the task of each developer having to creating reusable elements such as buttons, ListItems and so forth. Prime your "git clone" and head to http://qt.gitorious.org/qt-components. To provide feedback you can use bugreports, and if you want to discuss you can use the mailing list or IRC.
