[Upd] Firefox RC3 released
Mozilla has released Firefox for Maemo Release Candidate 3. This release fixes several usability bugs that were found, as well as addresses a number of performance issues. To improve page load times and responsiveness, a number of preferences and algorithms has been improved, resulting in faster zooming and panning.

Plugin support has been disabled for this release because the Adobe Flash plugin used on many sites was degrading the performance of the browser. If you wish to enable experimental plugin support, you can do it manually via about:config. Mozilla is working on an add-on that will allow the user to have control of which sites to enable plugins for.

Firefox can be downloaded from here.

New Salling Media Sync is N900 compatible
Salling Software updated its application for syncing media from iTunes and compatible photo applications to mobile devices. The new version is compatible with Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 (Windows version only) and some of the hottest new phones, including the Nokia N900.

Once the phone is connected to a USB port, the users simply select the playlists, podcasts and photo albums they want on the device. Salling Media Sync not only uploads the music tracks and podcast episodes, but also replicates each actual playlist on the device and—on devices that support it—transfers play count metadata for each item to the device, reinforcing the sense of having a piece of iTunes in your pocket.

Salling Media Sync 1.1.5 is available now through Salling Software's web site at no cost for basic use. At a price of $22/€15 per user license, the application intelligently updates your phone, resulting in faster syncs. Windows and Mac licenses are sold separately, and the bundle can be bought at a 25% discount.

Salling Media Sync for Windows is compatible with Windows XP SP2 (with Windows Media Player 11) or better, iTunes 7.6.x - 9.0.2 (for music and podcasts), and Adobe Photoshop Album SE 3.2 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.x - 8.x (for photos). Salling Media Sync for Mac is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or better, iTunes 7.6.x - 9.0.2 (for music and podcasts), and iPhoto '08 - '09 or Aperture 2.x (for photos).

Please see http://www.salling.com/MediaSync/ for details.

Nokia PUSH N900 MOD in the USA - Call for entries
Nokia invites US tweekers and modders to submit their ideas for morphing the Nokia N900 into something entirely new. Whether it's turning the Nokia N900 into a TV remote control or the brain of a fully functioning robot, the only limit is the contestants' imagination.

The top three ideas will be chosen from the ideas submitted by a panel of judges, after which the finalist teams will be provided with a Nokia N900 and some support to actually build their mod. In March, Nokia will bring a representative (and guest) from each of the three PUSH N900 MOD IN THE USA finalists to CTIA in Las Vegas, where each representative will have the chance to demonstrate their creativity for final judging and the chance to win cash prizes ranging from USD 3,000 to USD 10,000.

A global PUSH N900 competition held in October 2009 drew hundreds of entries and resulted in the construction of five widely varying mods, including a skateboard that tracks your tricks and lets you compete against friends with their own Nokia N900s, an N900-equipped kite that lets you control the camera from the ground, a spray can that brings light graffiti to the N900, a Nokia N900-outfitted belt that vibrates to navigate you in the right direction, and a Nokia N900 with arms that will draw what you photograph on an Etch-a-Sketch.

For more information or to submit an entry for the PUSH N900 MOD IN THE USA challenge, please visit http://www.blogs.nokia.com/pushn900/usa.

Firmware update 2.2009.51-1 (PR1.1) for the N900 now available
Major firmware update, 2.2009.51-1, has just been made available and you should now see the update notification on your device (if you don't, launch the App Manager and refresh it). The update download is 89.5 MB and it temporarily requires 45 MB free space in rootfs - if you don't have that much you'll need to check which installed packages are not optified and occupy rootfs and unistall them. You can also free some additional space for the update by temporarily removing some configured repositories in the App Manager, especially Extras-Devel which usually contains the most packages and therefore has the largest local cache/database file. Even though the N900 supports User Data Preservation (which means that OTA firmware updates do not wipe user data) you are advised to make a backup prior to launching the update, just in case.

Please check this thread on our forums for more information and first impressions, and post yours after you update your device.

The update brings numerous performance and stability improvements (the device feels noticeably faster) as well as a series of fixes of reported bugs and issues. Sadly, besides support for MS Exchange 2003 and some tweaks and improvements to various system functions (e.g. quick dial from a desktop shortcut) and applications (e.g. improved layout of Maps), it does NOT bring any new functionality. Read: still no MMS, no portrait mode for the web browser, no voice dialing, no voice guided GPS navigation, and so on. Well, maybe the next time....

Detailed changelog is available here.

[New] Catorise - categories/folders for the Applications menu!
Catorise by Andrew Flegg (with whom I've had a really interesting discussion last evening about what he thinks about this website) divides the Applications menu into folders matching the categories known from the Application Manager. With the number of applications available for Maemo growing so quickly it's really great to finally have some solution to somehow organize that long list of unordered icons! Red Pill Mode gone - whose crazy idea was it?
Today's firmware update removes the Red Pill Mode support from N900's Application Manager. And I am asking: whose crazy idea was it? And what was the purpose of removing it?

Was it for security reasons? Unlikely. Those who were using the Red Pill mode will certainly also be brave enough to use dpkg in the X Terminal (which - thanks God - still works). But to do it, they will have to enable root access and key in command line arguments, both actually MUCH LESS SECURE and subject to making MORE MISTAKES than using the quite elegant and safe GUI-based (R.I.P) Red Pill Mode.

If not for security, then what for? To make it more difficult to have alternate software distribution/sales channels competing with the just launched Ovi store? Correct me if I am wrong, but that's the only valid reason that comes to my mind, and I don't like such a purpose at all. It's like making one step towards the iPhone, but towards its RESTRICTIONS and not its advantages.

Ovi store now open for the N900
A beta version of Nokia's OVI store for the N900 is now open. While the "Ovi Store" icon in the menu still only shows a "Coming soon" page, you can now type http://store.ovi.mobi in N900's built-in web browser to access the beta (but fully functional) version of the store. At the moment it contains about 40 free apps and games, as well as some videos, ringtones and themes.

N900 firmware update 1.2009.44.1 now available
Nokia has just released its first firmware update for the N900. It is available Over The Air through the Application Manager and should be reported to you automatically. If the notification (orange exclamation mark in the status area) hasn't shown yet on your device, connect to the Internet, launch the App Manager and select the "Refresh" option from its menu.

Version 1.2009.44.1 seems to be a minor update of some components of the core OS so don't expect any groundshaking changes, with the most apparent one being improved GUI of the Application Manager itself. However, our users started reporting a number of small bugfixes and performance improvements (see here and here) so it is highly advisable to upgrade your device. The N900 and OTA firmware upgrades support User Data Preservation but you should make a full backup of all your data before starting the update, just to be on the safe side...

It started raining (attempts of) MMS solutions for the N900
While MMS is probably the LEAST important thing I expect to see in upcoming firmware updates for the N900 (I'd easily exchange it - with extra charge! - for e.g. voice dialing), it's apparently much more important for other people. Some initial (and successful) attempts to make it possible to send and receive MMS on the N900 have been made by at least two developers - see here and here.

Firefox RC 1.0 available but not impressing
Yes, others already announced it earlier. I was slow with this news because there actually isn't much to announce. Firefox / Fennec has indeed reached 1.0 Release Candidate version but... remained slow as hell. It does work properly but its slowness actually disqualifies it for serious use. The only noticeable advantage at this stage is that it is now properly optified, so if you want to give it a test at least it won't eat precious rootfs space... To get it, add Mozilla repository to your App Manager.
