Qt SDK 1.1 Release Candidate now available |
|
Nokia has released Qt SDK 1.1 Release Candidate. This is a major step towards the final Qt SDK 1.1, building on the beta released a couple of weeks ago. The testing is taking place over the next two weeks, after which the final SDK will be published. With the final release, your applications will be supported by Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian and Ovi Store will be ready to accept your apps.
Summarizing the most important updates compared to the beta:
* Qt 4.7.3 is included for Desktop and Symbian
* Update to Qt Mobility 1.1.2
* Qt Assistant added as separate package (due to developer request)
* Installer can use system proxy on Linux
* Notification API moved from experimental to "Additional APIs"
* Several fixes for the Qt Simulator
* Several fixes for the installation/updating workflow.
Qt 4.7 will not be supported on S60 3rd Edition. For these devices your applications can use Qt 4.6.3 and Qt Mobility 1.1.2.
With the final release of the Qt SDK 1.1, the 1.0 version will be withdrawn. The Qt SDK 1.1 supports Qt 4.6 and Qt 4.7 configurations, so it will be the only SDK you need to build apps for all supported devices.
This Release Candidate is available for download on the Forum Nokia pages.

QuickHit - basic shooting game and Qt example |
|
QuickHit is essentially a basic shooting game, but differentiated from other such games by its levels. The levels are Qt plug-ins which are loaded during QuickHit startup. Different levels are shown in the application's main menu. Levels can have different sounds, graphics, and level QML files. A common characteristic for all levels is that your ship is at the bottom of the screen and shoots upwards. This Qt example application demonstrates Qt Quick as a game platform.

From now on, WeTab (the first MeeGo based tablet) owners can run Android applications on their tablet - "Android Starter" has just appeared in WeTab Market app store. At first I thought that it might be the Myriad Alien Dalvik so I quickly installed it, and it turned out to be a port of Android 2.1 running in Virtual Box. While this solution maybe isn't as "elegant" as what Alien Dalvik would provide (you can't install and run Android apps "natively", directly from within the WeTab OS, but insteat you need to "boot" the Android OS), it is still much more convenient than NITDroid on the N900 because VirtualBox with Android OS runs just like a normal application, i.e. with the WeTab MeeGo OS still running (and multitasking) in the background, so you have both systems running at the same time. The Android 2.1 OS itself seems to be a cut-down version meant to be just an environment for running Android apps, i.e. lightweight and quick to use, with just the desktop and settings, and all unnecessary standard Android apps not present. When you exit the Android/VirtualBox, it automatically saves its state so the next time you launch it you quickly (in just a few seconds) go back to where you left it and you don't have to "boot" it from scratch. AndroidPIT Market is integrated providing access to several thousand free and paid Android apps. You can also install Android software manually.
Please see our MeeGo forum for some screenshots. More information will be posted as soon as I play some more with it.
