PanoRIMio for BlackBerry 10 |
|
PanoRIMio is a native (BB10 Cascades), feature rich Panoramio viewer for BlackBerry 10, providing you easy and quick access to tens of millions of Panoramio pictures from around the world, easier and quicker than on Panoramio itself. Countless images of any location are at your disposal within seconds and can be viewed in a multitude of ways.
Multiple location input options (address or place of interest, coordinates in either decimal or DMS format, map, current location from GPS) let you easily select the exact place you want to see pictures of, and you can even choose a range in kilometers around the selected point to include images from.
Don't want to browse by location? There is also a "Tag / Keyword" option that shows images by tags or subject - just type e.g. "HDR" to view tens of thousands of beautiful HDR pictures, or "sunset" to see countless sunset sceneries, or even "Car crash" for images of car accidents from all around the world. Or anything else you'd like to see.
Select from four gallery types to view the images in your preferred way: filmstip-like vertically scrollable list, tile grid, slideshow with configurable interval, or the classic map layer.
The application is also integrated with Google Maps and Street View, showing you the exact location an image was taken at.

Digia to acquire Qt from Nokia |
|
Digia today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Qt software technologies and Qt business from Nokia and further extend the cross-platform availability of Qt on mobile, embedded and desktop.
Following the acquisition Digia becomes responsible for all the Qt activities formerly carried out by Nokia. These include product development, as well as the commercial and open source licensing and service business. Following the acquisition, Digia plans to quickly enable Qt on Android, iOS and Windows 8 platforms. One of Digia's key objectives with this acquisition is to improve its position within the Qt ecosystem by further strengthening Qt's R&D capabilities and expanding its reach on many more platforms than ever before. As part of the transaction, a maximum of 125 Qt people from Nokia will transfer to Digia.

Qt SDK 1.2.1 update and Qt 3D 1.0 released |
|
The Qt SDK 1.2.1 is now available for download. It brings increased stability to the Qt SDK 1.2. The updated SDK includes Qt 4.8.1 desktop installers for Mac and Windows in addition to Qt source packages. Qt 4.8.1 is the first patch release to the 4.8 series with over 200 functional improvements to the desktop and embedded platforms. The focus of the error corrections, made by primarily by Digia, has been on desktop and embedded platforms with a large number of fixes focussed on QtCore, QtGUI and QtNetwork. For more details please see: Qt 4.8 library release.
Increased ease targeting Nokia N9 through bug fixes and added functionality: The added functionality in the Qt SDK 1.2.1 relates mainly to improved runtimes for testing. The Simulator now supports both landscape and portrait orientations. In addition, the Qt Quick Components in the Simulator have been upgraded to use the same version as is on the device. There are now three separate QEMU images - one each for PR1.0, PR1.1 and PR1.2.
In the last weeks there have also been some other updates that will help you with your Nokia N9 development:
- An example application showcasing key Harmattan APIs. The application shows how to utilize Qt Mobility interfaces (e.g. maps, multimedia and sensor data) in applications.
- The Harmattan developer library and UX documentation have been updated. The latter is available online, and the former is also provided within the Harmattan target for Qt SDK.
Other interesting projects:
- Shader effects using QML. Have you noticed / tested the Qt.labs.shaders plugin yet? It ships with Qt 4.7.4 onwards, making it easier to make graphical effects with QML. A Qt 4 version of the demo is available here for desktop and Nokia N9.
- For developers looking at 3D technologies, Qt 3D 1.0 for Qt 4.8.1 has also been released today. Qt 3D will be providing OpenGL accelerated 3D content defined in QML. Qt 3D packages for Harmattan and Symbian are not pre-built and you'll have to build them yourself. Nokia N9 build instructions can be found here.

Qt SDK 1.2, QtCreator 2.4.1 and more |
|
Nokia has released Qt SDK 1.2. This update sets a new baseline for the developers for a longer perspective. Some of the features have already been available as online updates, but Qt SDK 1.2 now integrates the very latest tools, most recent mobile build targets for Symbian and Nokia N9, and the still fresh Qt 4.8 for desktops. Some improvements to the SDK and its maintenance tool have also been introduced.
As a summary, this is what is new in the Qt SDK:
- Fixes for Qt Creator 2.4 in a new 2.4.1 patch update
- Qt 4.8 for desktops delivering Qt Quick 1.1, Qt platform abstraction, Qt WebKit 2.2, and threaded OpenGL
- More Qt Mobility examples for Nokia N9 and Symbian devices
- Ability to specify network proxy setting in the SDK Maintenance Tool
- Update to the Symbian Complementary Package introducing Analyze Tool plugin and new CODA 1.0.6 installation package
- An update to Notifications API improving the end user experience and fixing issues in the Nokia N9 implementation of the API.
If you already have Qt SDK installed, you can update to the latest version by running Update Qt SDK from the Qt SDK application folder on your computer. If you first time are getting started with Qt SDK, you can download 1.2 from the download page.

Qt has reached another important evolutionary milestone today as Qt 4.8.0 has now been released. Featuring Qt Platform Abstraction, threaded OpenGL support, multithreaded HTTP and optimized file system access, Qt 4.8.0 can be downloaded as binary or source packages. Here are some key features that are new in Qt 4.8.0:
- Qt Platform Abstraction (QPA). QPA restructures the GUI stack to enable easier porting of Qt to different windowing systems and devices. More info.
- Threaded OpenGL support. Enables those of us that are not OpenGL-ninjas to render OpenGL from more than one thread concurrently. More info.
- Multithreaded HTTP. HTTP requests are now handled in a separate thread by default. This should make application guis smoother, as networking will no longer use the main event loop.
- Optimized file system access. The file system stack received some heavy lifting under the hood. The result is better I/O performance, achieved by reducing the number of system calls performed for I/O and by better use of cached data, when available. The improvements in performance can be seen across all platforms.
Qt 4.8.0 ships with QtWebKit 2.2.1. More details of the major changes can be found in the Qt 4.8 beta blog post. Qt 4.8 Docs are now available on Qt DevNet.

Run Harmattan (Nokia N9 / N950) applications on the N900 with Nemo |
|
Nemo (former MeeGo CE) has evolved a lot and it's no longer just a proof that installing MeeGo on the N900 is possible and.... not much besides. It slowly becomes a full featured and useful system.
For instance, you can use it to run MeeGo Harmattan (Nokia N9 / N950) software on your old N900.... Even just by simply copying the files, without doing any changes, testers were able to run without any problems over 50% of the apps they tried. The other half didn't work "out of the box" but probably with some small tweaks compatibility can be further improved...
Watch this video and install Nemo now!

New CSSU update for Maemo 5 version 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1 is out |
|
New Maemo 5 system update version 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1 is out and you should see it in the Application Manager (if not, try refreshing it). Changelog includes:
* Added Qt DigiNotar blacklists.
* Fixed modest crashes.
* Fixed camera-ui corrupting videos after switching to background while recording.
* Fixed camera-ui overwriting user data.
* Fixed portrait wallpapers in hildon-home.
* CSSU rebased on top of official PR1.3.1 release.
Please note that this is a testing release - that's what the T symbol in the version string stands for. Stable release should follow soon. Keep in mind that changing between stable and testing releases requires a reflash, so if you prefer to eventually have the stable release on your device without having to reflash it, skip this one and wait for the version marked with S in the release string.

New Qt SDK release with significant Nokia N9 Harmattan and Symbian improvements |
|
The new Qt SDK 1.1.4 brings major stability, performance, and functionality improvements for the much improved Nokia N9 Harmattan target as well as the Qt 4.7.4 "bundle" for all Symbian^3, Symbian Anna, and Symbian Belle smartphones. You now have better tools than even before as well as a large installed base of modern Symbian phones and the Nokia N9 to target with Qt apps.
For Qt on Symbian, the release offers closer integration of Qt into the Symbian operating system services. Qt graphics system, split view keyboard, and support for Symbian Belle UI features are all included. In particular the improvements with regard to the Qt Quick Components 1.1 and Qt Quick 1.1 modules are significant - and will truly ease and speed up development. The Qt 4.7.4 release bundle for Symbian contains Qt Quick 1.1, Qt Mobility 1.2, Qt WebKit 2.1, and Qt Quick Components 1.1.
With regard to the Nokia N9, the Qt SDK Harmattan target is now a full release and installed by default. Other visible changes are the evolution to a single unified sysroot (no tools-level distinction between Platform API and its more productised subset), a single target (with debug and release flavours of the build), and major up-dates to the documentation.
