How to access the full N900 file system from desktop computer via WLAN?

If you want to modify some config files or tweak your N900, you often need to access system folders and files. It can be done directly on the N900, e.g. using Midnight Commander or one of many other available file managers, but sometimes it is much more convenient to be able to access your N900's file system directly from your computer. By default, when you connect the N900 to PC via USB and select the "Mass storage" mode you only get access to the MyDocs (i.e. /home/user/MyDocs) folder on the device and to the memory card, so the actual operating system is beyond your reach. Below you can find instructions how to get access to the entire file system of your Maemo device from your Windows PC over your home wireless network.

1. For this method to work, you have to install the SSH server on your N900. Launch the Application Manager on your N900, search for a package called OpenSSH Server and install it. During the installation, it will ask you to enter the root password. Choose one and REMEMBER IT!

2. On your computer download WinSCP (a free FTP client for Windows). We recommend downloading the "Portable executables" version which doesn't need to be installed - it consists of just two executables you can place anywhere and launch just by clicking winscp.exe.

3. Now you need to check the current IP address of your Nokia N900 in your network. The quickest way is to open the X-Terminal and type: netstat -t. What you need is shown in the "Local address" column (e.g. 192.168.1.105). Another way to have your current IP address always shown on your desktop is to install HomeIP desktop widget.

4. Launch WinSCP on your computer. You will see a window like the one shown below. The only things you need to enter is the IP address of your N900 (see step 3. above), "root" as User name, and the password you set when installing the SSH server on your N900 (see step 1). Leave all the remaining options unchanged and click on the "Login" button.

You will see a dual-pane file manager similar to e.g. Total Commander, showing contents of your N900 file system in one window and your computer's file system in the other.

Now you can browse the entire file system of your N900 and exchange files between the phone and PC.
