How to write in Arabic (or other unsupported language) on the N900?

The N900 comes with a nice set of supported languages and keyboard layouts, but it obviously isn't full. Certain languages (including as important ones as e.g. Arabic) are missing.

In order to add hardware and/or virtual keyboard layouts for additional languages (including e.g. Arabic, Belorussian, Bulgarian, Croatian, English Dvorak, Czech QWERTY, Hebrew, Hungarian (QWERTZ), Thai and Turkish, do the following steps:

  • The device ships with the "Extras" repository disabled by default. So if you haven't done it yet, go to the Application Manager and enable it (select "Application catalogues" from the menu, open "Extras" and untick the "Disable" button).
  • Refresh the Application list and then download and install uKeyboard application.
  • Under device's Settings, open "Text input" and select your language as the second language, and enable the virtual keyboard for it.
